Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure
How you contracted mesothelioma from asbestos exposure
Exposure to asbestos fibers can cause asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma cancer and others. In fact, it is the only known cause of mesothelioma.
Exposure to even a small concentration of asbestos fibers is a potentially dangerous risk. Most such exposure likely occurred prior to the 1980s, but the latency period can be 40 years or more for most asbestos-related cancers to develop. (See more information on screening.)
Since the time from exposure to diagnosis can be long, checking the list of contemplated occupations and places where you or a loved one may have been exposed is important. This is especially true if you want to consider taking legal action to obtain compensation from those responsible for your asbestos exposure. California asbestos attorneys at Kazan Law would be pleased to discuss this with you.
At risk at work and home
So where and how were you exposed to dangerous doses of asbestos fibers?
- On the job — This is known as occupational exposure.
- As a family member of someone working in an at-risk occupation —This is called paraoccupational exposure. It can involve contamination of houses, cars and clothing. By one estimate*, nearly 80 percent of mesothelioma cases were the direct result of occupational or paraoccupational exposure to primary asbestos fibers.
- Neighborhood — This comes from having lived near sites likely to put asbestos into the neighborhood air. It includes such entities as refineries, power plants, factories, shipyards, steel mills and building demolitions.
