Types of Asbestos Diseases
The differences are important
There are several different kinds of diseases that are related to previous exposure to asbestos fibers, and they can be categorized in various ways. One way is whether they are:
- Malignant/cancerous, such as mesothelioma and lung cancer
- Benign (non-malignant or non-cancerous), such as asbestosis, pleural plaques, diffuse pleural fibrosis, and benign pleural effusions.
Another categorization is severity:
- Severely disabling or fatal, like mesothelioma, advanced asbestosis and lung cancer
- Less severe or non-symptomatic, such as mild asbestosis, pleural plaques and thickening, which rarely produce symptoms or disability
The diseases for which asbestos exposure is a generally accepted cause are:
|
|
Diseases for which asbestos exposure as a cause of cancers are less clear at present:
- Kidney
- GI tract
- Ovary
Consult a physician
Each of these asbestos-related diseases can only be diagnosed through medical examinations and tests. Just because you were exposed to asbestos does not mean that you therefore must have, or will have, an asbestos-caused disease. But it does mean that you should:
- Be vigilant about your health
- Receive regular medical care and check-ups
- Tell your doctor about your asbestos exposure
Speak with an attorney
Despite the fact that some of the symptoms of diseases associated with asbestos exposure may not seem severe, in reality even the least severe ailment is a significant health problem. And the majority of the diseases are horrific. They can be fatal in a short period of time, particularly because they tend to be caught only in late stages of cancer.
There is a long history of success in getting asbestos exposure victims and their families compensation from those responsible for their exposure and subsequent illnesses and/or deaths.
